     AIM

    The Faculty of Languages and Linguistics at the University of Malaya is pleased to announce the inaugural University of  Malaya Conference on Discourse and Society (UMDS 2008). UMDS 2008 aims to bring together scholars from various disciplines to exchange ideas as well as offer new perspectives and directions in research on discourse and society.

     FOCUS

    While we welcome papers (in English or Bahasa Malaysia) from any topic in the field of discourse, we wish to encourage debate from different theoretical and methodological perspectives. Topics of interest include:

    l  meaning construction through new and contemporary discourses

    l  characteristics of discursive practices

    l  discourse and construction of reality

    l  approaches to discourse

    l  interdisciplinary approaches to discourse  (media, literature, communication, management,  sociology, political science)

    l  various frameworks in discourse analysis such as genre analysis, critical discourse analysis, interdiscursive analysis, multimodality, gender, systemic functional linguistics

    l  other related areas of research in discourse

     CALL FOR PAPERS

    Submissions are invited for abstracts for oral or poster presentations on any topic related to discourse and society. Papers will be 20 minutes in duration with an additional 10 minutes for discussion. Abstracts (a maximum of 300 words in either English or Bahasa Malaysia) must be received by 18 June  2008. Authors will  be notified by 23 June 2008.  Please send your abstracts to sridevi@um.edu.my.

     REGISTRATION

    The RM250 fee for registration includes refreshments and lunch.

     PROCEEDINGS

    Selected papers will be published in a special issue of the Journal of Modern Languages.
